Fresher hiring intent hits 75% in H2 2025, AI skills now a baseline demand
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's fresher hiring outlook has strengthened heading into the July–December 2025 period, with 75 per cent of employers signalling an intent to bring on entry-level talent, according to a TeamLease EdTech report released on Monday, 10 August. The figure marks an uptick from 73 per cent recorded in the first half of the year, suggesting a cautious but broadening recovery in campus and fresher recruitment.
Sectors Driving Demand
Retail, e-commerce, technology startups, and manufacturing continued to lead fresher absorption, according to the report. These sectors have increasingly prioritised job-ready, practically skilled candidates over those with purely academic credentials. The momentum in these segments has offset softness elsewhere, keeping the overall headline figure in positive territory.
Where Hiring Intent Slipped
The recovery was not uniform. IT sector fresher hiring intent fell to 76 per cent in the second half from 81 per cent in the first — a notable five-percentage-point decline. Consulting, telecom, and marketing and advertising each recorded a drop of three per cent, while media and entertainment and educational services saw intent ease by two per cent. The pattern points to a structural shift: sectors facing margin pressure or demand uncertainty are becoming more selective, not less active.
AI Proficiency Now a Baseline Expectation
TeamLease EdTech Founder and CEO Shantanu Rooj noted that employers are raising the bar on what they expect from freshers at the point of hire. 'Sectors such as retail, e-commerce and manufacturing are increasing hiring as they find candidates with practical and job-ready skills, while IT and consulting employers increasingly expect AI proficiency, applied problem-solving and hands-on project experience,' Rooj said. He added that skilling needed to be embedded within education itself, so that graduates were prepared for roles where demand was actively growing.
City-Wise Snapshot
Bengaluru led all cities with a fresher hiring intent of approximately 90 per cent, reinforcing its position as India's primary tech and startup employment hub. Mumbai followed at 75 per cent, while Chennai recorded 71 per cent. The city-level divergence reflects the concentration of high-growth sectors in these metros, particularly in the south.
Certifications That Boost Employability
The report identified specific skill-based certifications as employability differentiators in the current environment. Courses in VLSI chip design, AI engineering, cloud security, digital marketing analytics, and good manufacturing practices were flagged as being in active demand by recruiters. As hiring grows more selective, such certifications are increasingly functioning as screening signals rather than optional add-ons.
With AI integration accelerating across sectors, the gap between fresher supply and employer expectations is likely to widen further unless academic institutions and skilling platforms move in tandem with industry requirements.
