GitHub Reaches Milestone of 150 Million Developers, Introduces New Free Tier

New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) The Microsoft Copilot-driven platform GitHub announced on Thursday that it has officially surpassed 150 million developers on its platform.

The coding giant also unveiled ‘GitHub Copilot Free’ in VS Code, which integrates smoothly with a user’s GitHub account, featuring Copilot Chat readily accessible from the GitHub dashboard.

“With GitHub Copilot Free in VS Code, India can accelerate its journey to becoming the largest developer community globally. However, this will only happen if we actively pursue it,” stated GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke.

Now seamlessly integrated into VS Code, all GitHub users can utilize 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month, just by signing in with an existing GitHub account or creating a new one, as per the company’s announcement.

Copilot Free offers developers a choice between Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet or OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.

According to the firm, users can pose coding questions, clarify existing code, or assist in bug detection. They can also make edits across multiple files and access Copilot’s third-party agents or develop their own extensions.

“Additionally, Copilot Chat is now directly available from the GitHub dashboard and functions with Copilot Free, enabling all developers to start using it immediately,” the company added.

GitHub boasts over 17 million developers in India, reflecting a remarkable 28 percent increase in 2024, solidifying India's position as the fastest-growing developer community worldwide.

India is also the second-largest developer community contributing to public generative AI projects on GitHub, trailing only the US, with a 79 percent increase from the previous year.

The nation recorded a 95 percent year-over-year (YoY) rise in contributions to these projects, ranking third globally, following the US and Hong Kong.

Dohmke noted that India’s thriving developer community is utilizing AI to construct AI at unprecedented rates, increasing the likelihood that the next major multinational corporation will emerge from India.

The company anticipates that India will surpass the US, becoming the world’s largest developer community by 2028.
