India's GitHub Developer Community Hits 27 Million Mark
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 11 (NationPress) On Saturday, GitHub, the premier platform for collaborative software development, announced that the number of developers innovating on GitHub in India has reached 27 million.
In the year 2026 alone, over two million developers from India have joined GitHub, making up for one in seven of the new developers worldwide — a figure that surpasses any other nation.
GitHub emphasized that India boasts the fastest-growing developer community globally, with no indication of a slowdown.
Moreover, India is recognized as hosting the largest base of open-source contributors and is the second-largest source of open-source contributions overall, second only to the United States.
Indian developers have contributed over 7.5 million times to open-source AI projects on GitHub, positioning India as the second-largest contributor to open-source AI on a global scale.
Furthermore, India is at the forefront of creating open-source technologies that are globally recognized. Initiatives like Hyperswitch (payments), ERPNext (enterprise solutions), ToolJet (low-code development), and Bruno (API testing) exemplify successful open-source projects from India that have garnered international adoption.
With more than 180 million developers using GitHub, including over 90% of Fortune 100 companies, and more than 77,000 organizations embracing GitHub Copilot, the platform remains a cornerstone of collaborative development.
In December of the previous year, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella stated that India is on the trajectory to become the largest developer community globally by 2030, highlighting the nation's expanding talent pool and its emerging leadership in next-generation AI innovation.
Nadella projected that India would have 57.5 million developers by 2030, marking it as the largest developer base in the world.
He noted this presents a significant opportunity for India to offer solutions on a “societal scale” through AI. According to Nadella, developers in India are already utilizing GitHub, Azure, and Microsoft’s latest AI platforms to work on advanced projects previously confined to large research labs.
Discussing the future of software development, Nadella stated that the focus is shifting away from a singular AI model towards the creation of a comprehensive ecosystem where developers can select the appropriate model, assess it, and deploy it confidently.
