New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The global market for PCs saw a 4% increase year-on-year (YoY), reaching 62.8 million units in the first quarter of 2026, according to a report published on Wednesday.

Data from Gartner indicated that this uptick in PC shipments for the January to March period does not fully represent genuine consumer demand.

Instead, manufacturers and their partners ramped up inventory levels, anticipating rising costs for components in the upcoming quarter.

Rishi Padhi, a Research Principal at Gartner, expressed that the year-on-year growth appears to be ‘artificially inflated,’ largely due to stockpiling in anticipation of price hikes linked to increasing memory costs, often referred to as memflation, as well as the higher prices of DRAM and NAND flash components.

This trend was markedly evident in the lower-margin segments of the PC market.

Additionally, the growth figures were affected by the previous year's context, as the first quarter of 2025 experienced heightened shipments due to preemptive purchases before US tariffs, thereby skewing the year-on-year comparisons.

Regarding vendor performance, there were no major shifts among the top four global PC manufacturers.

Lenovo continued to dominate the worldwide shipment rankings, while HP Inc. held onto the second position, even though it experienced a slight decline in market share.

Dell Technologies managed to gain market share during this quarter.

Among the significant players, Apple stood out as the fastest-growing vendor, achieving a remarkable 12.7% increase in shipments compared to the previous year.

This surge was primarily fueled by robust demand for the MacBook Neo series, especially from new users and the educational sector.

“The strong performance was mainly driven by the high demand for the MacBook Neo, particularly from new Mac users and those in the education field,” Padhi noted.

“This strategic approach allowed Apple to appeal to budget-conscious consumers seeking high-performance options, thereby reinforcing its competitive edge in this segment,” he added.

The report underscored that this strategic positioning was instrumental in attracting cost-sensitive customers looking for premium devices, enhancing Apple's competitive standing in the global PC landscape.

Meanwhile, ASUS surpassed Acer to claim the fifth position in the global vendor rankings during this quarter.

Point of View

It's crucial to view the recent increase in PC shipments with a discerning eye. While the numbers suggest growth, they may be misleading due to preemptive inventory increases rather than genuine consumer demand. This nuanced understanding is essential for navigating the complex landscape of the global PC market.
