New Delhi, July 22 (NationPress) Currently, India and the US are in discussions over a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) that remains unsigned. The government is meticulously addressing all the sensitivities linked to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to ensure that India's interests are safeguarded, as reported to Parliament on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, shared this information in a formal reply to the Lok Sabha. He noted, “Each FTA is distinctive and tailored to specific trade dynamics, aiming to maximize advantages for both countries. The India-US BTA is still under negotiation.”
“The Indian government is committed to addressing all sensitivities relating to the FTA and ensuring that India's interests remain protected. The FTA will only take effect after being signed and ratified by both nations,” he added.
Intensive negotiations are currently underway to finalize a preliminary trade agreement between New Delhi and Washington before the looming August 1 deadline.
Regarding the India-UK trade deal, the minister informed that the Prime Ministers of India and the UK announced the successful conclusion of negotiations for the India-UK FTA on May 6, 2025.
“The FTA with the UK is a modern, comprehensive, and historic agreement that aims for deep economic integration, along with trade liberalization and tariff concessions. It guarantees extensive market access for goods across all sectors, covering all of India’s export interests,” Prasada stated.
The agreement promotes sound regulatory practices and boosts transparency, aligning with India’s own focus on domestic reforms to improve the ease of doing business.
In the meantime, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi in London for the signing of the free trade agreement between India and the UK this week.
Invited by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, PM Modi will make an official visit to the United Kingdom from July 23 to 24, marking his fourth visit to the UK.
This agreement unlocks significant export opportunities for India’s labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, marine products, leather, footwear, sports goods, toys, gems, and jewelry, along with critical sectors like engineering goods, auto parts, and organic chemicals, as stated.
