Gramin Dak Sevaks: The First Mile of Governance, Says MoS
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) The Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) are recognized not as the final link in governance but as the initial one, essential for delivering government services to rural areas, emphasized Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani on Sunday.
During a Gramin Dak Sevak Sammelan in Chennai, Pemmasani commended the significant role of GDS in linking rural communities with government services.
He referred to them as the “heartbeat of rural India,” highlighting their crucial function in ensuring that various services and schemes effectively reach individuals residing in the countryside.
“You are not the last mile of governance; you are the first mile. Without your efforts, government services cannot penetrate the villages,” the minister stated.
“From the delivery of letters and packages to assisting citizens with banking needs, Aadhaar, and passport services, postal workers cater to every village, street, and household,” Pemmasani remarked.
Despite challenging weather conditions, these workers maintain their role as a trusted bridge between the government and the populace.
Pemmasani also underscored the expansion of the logistics sector, noting that India Post has a significant opportunity to broaden its footprint in the e-commerce arena.
“Currently, India Post generates less than Rs 1,000 crore from parcel services, whereas a single private courier firm earns nearly Rs 6,000 crore,” he pointed out.
For decades, India Post has been a fundamental aspect of communication in the nation, delivering legal documents, money orders, newspapers, and books.
“In numerous villages, postmen have also assisted residents in composing letters, serving as a reliable link between rural communities and the broader world,” the minister added.
Pemmasani highlighted that India boasts one of the world’s largest postal networks, comprising nearly four lakh regular employees and over 2.5 lakh Gramin Dak Sevaks, operating through more than 1.6 lakh post offices.
He also mentioned that the government is committed to transforming the Department of Posts into a modern, technology-driven logistics entity under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
