Chennai, Sep 2 (NationPress) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated on Tuesday that forthcoming GST reforms will foster an open and transparent economy, alleviate compliance challenges, and support small enterprises.
During the 120th Foundation Day celebrations of City Union Bank in Tamil Nadu, the Finance Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has established a task force aimed at next-generation reforms with a clear objective to simplify regulations, minimize compliance expenses, and cultivate a more supportive environment for startups and MSMEs.
FM Sitharaman hinted at the rationale behind the upcoming GST council meeting, urging all banks to not only enhance credit availability but also to drive infrastructure growth and ensure timely, need-based funding for MSMEs.
She further emphasized that for India to realize its vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047', it's vital to include the unbanked population in formal banking and address various financial needs.
"In the past 11 years, 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been established, with total deposits reaching Rs 2.68 lakh crore. Notably, 67% of these accounts were opened in rural and semi-urban regions, with women accounting for 56% of all accounts," FM Sitharaman stated.
In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi highlighted substantial Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, promising a festive surprise for citizens.
The GST council is set to meet this week for a two-day session to reassess GST rates on over 150 items.
The council aims to revamp the rate framework, transitioning from the current four-rate system to a simplified two-rate structure by shifting various items from the 12% and 18% GST brackets to the 5% slab or even to the Nil GST category.
