Did Kaynes Semicon Just Ship India's First Commercial Multi-Chip Module?

Synopsis

In a groundbreaking achievement, Kaynes Semicon has dispatched India's first commercial multi-chip module to the US, heralding a new era in India's semiconductor industry. With advanced technology, this shipment signifies a leap towards self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing.

Key Takeaways

  • Kaynes Semicon dispatched India's first commercial multi-chip module.
  • The shipment includes 900 intelligent power modules.
  • The module features advanced components such as IGBTs and diodes.
  • The pilot-line manufacturing began under the India Semiconductor Mission 1.0.
  • India's semiconductor market is set to grow significantly by 2030.

New Delhi, Oct 17 (NationPress) - The semiconductor solutions provider Kaynes Semicon has successfully dispatched India’s inaugural commercially packaged multi-chip module (MCM) to Alpha & Omega Semiconductor located in California. This shipment includes around 900 intelligent power modules, as reported.

According to Raghu Panicker, CEO of Kaynes Semicon, "This is a complex chip that we assembled, tested for quality, marked, and packaged for AOS, and rolled out from our Sanand OSAT. We have a capacity to produce 3,000 pieces per day and will dispatch another shipment next month."

He further mentioned, "This unique module contains 17 dies, including six IGBTs, two controller ICs, six FRDs, and three diodes, making it one of the most advanced modules in its field."

The company began its pilot-line manufacturing in April under the India Semiconductor Mission 1.0, which is supported by a central government investment of Rs 1,653.5 crore.

An intelligent power module (IPM) is a sophisticated electronic chip that integrates components to manage and safeguard the flow of electricity, optimizing the performance of devices like motors while conserving space and enhancing power control.

Kaynes Semicon has secured 100 percent of its annual capacity of approximately 4.6 billion chips with both global and domestic companies.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), initiated in 2021, features a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme valued at Rs 76,000 crore to enhance domestic manufacturing and design capabilities in the semiconductor sector.

India's semiconductor market was valued at $38 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach between $45 to $50 billion by 2024-25, and $100 to $110 billion by 2030. The global semiconductor market is anticipated to expand to $1 trillion by the same year.
