New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, expressed his strong disapproval on Monday regarding the decision of the Opposition members from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to boycott the proceedings of the House on the inaugural day of the budget session.

In an official statement, he remarked, "I unequivocally condemn the protests being staged outside the House by the Opposition members and their Leader, Atishi."

Speaker Gupta further stated, "Choosing to abstain from the House and not participating in its proceedings undermines the dignity of the institution and the principles of Parliamentary decorum." This comment came after AAP members chose to remain absent from the session, reportedly to demand the reversal of the suspension of four of their MLAs from the previous sitting.

He added, "In a democracy, the House serves as a vital forum for discussion and dialogue. The decision by the Opposition to withdraw from the Budget Session is profoundly disappointing."

Gupta emphasized the critical need for Opposition participation, especially during the presentation of the Delhi Budget.

He criticized the act of protesting outside rather than engaging in the discussions, stating, "Such actions are in stark contrast to established parliamentary traditions."

It is particularly regrettable that since the significant issue regarding the desecration of Sikh Gurus was raised in the previous Assembly session, the Leader of the Opposition, Atishi, has consistently avoided attending the House.

The Speaker concluded, "By failing to engage in the House proceedings and obstructing the democratic process, this behavior resembles an attempt to hijack Constitutional institutions."

He pointed out that several crucial reports were tabled that day, on which the Opposition should have articulated its stance and engaged in discussions.

Gupta reiterated the necessity for Opposition presence during such pivotal times, stating that it is both mandatory and extremely vital for the democratic process.

He criticized what he termed as insolence towards parliamentary traditions and the repeated contempt shown to the Chair as "highly condemnable."

Four AAP MLAs—Sanjeev Jha, Kuldeep Kumar, Somdutt, and Jarnail Singh—were suspended due to their disruptive behavior and non-compliance with the Chair's directions.

In the current composition of the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party holds 48 seats, while the AAP controls 22 seats.

Point of View

The actions of the AAP in boycotting House proceedings raise significant questions about the principles of engagement in a democratic system. The Speaker's remarks highlight the necessity for constructive dialogue, especially during critical budget discussions. This situation calls for a careful examination of how political dynamics can affect legislative processes.
