Mahindra auto sales up 15% in September; Hyundai India hits all-time record
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India delivered strong September numbers, with both automakers reporting double-digit year-on-year growth driven by sustained SUV demand and a buoyant pre-festive market. September's figures underline a broader trend of resilient consumer appetite in the Indian passenger and commercial vehicle segments.
Mahindra September Sales: Key Numbers
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited reported total auto sales of 1,14,874 vehicles in September 2026, a 15 per cent rise year-on-year including exports. Domestic utility vehicle (UV) sales climbed 14 per cent to 64,092 units, while domestic commercial vehicle sales also grew 14 per cent to 30,420 units.
Within the commercial vehicle segment, light commercial vehicles (LCVs) under 2 tonnes posted 4,044 units, up 19 per cent, and 2–3.5 tonne LCVs recorded 26,376 units, up 13 per cent. Three-wheeler sales, including electric models, surged 26 per cent to 16,343 units.
On a year-to-date basis through September, LCVs under 2 tonnes are up 30 per cent, while 2–3.5 tonne LCVs have risen 18 per cent — pointing to sustained commercial freight demand across segments.
Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, highlighted an additional milestone: 'Adding to this momentum, we are proud to have crossed the milestone of 1 lakh billing of our Electric Origin SUVs since launch.'
Hyundai Motor India Sets All-Time Monthly Sales Record
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) reported its highest-ever monthly total sales since inception, reaching 77,916 units in September — a 10.8 per cent YoY increase. Domestic sales stood at 57,166 units, up 10.9 per cent YoY, while exports touched 20,750 units, up 10.4 per cent YoY.
The record surpasses HMIL's previous all-time monthly high set in July 2026, making September the strongest single month in the company's India history. Tarun Garg, MD & CEO of HMIL, attributed the performance to broad-based demand: 'This number surpasses our previous record achieved in July 2026. The well-rounded growth across domestic and exports markets is a testament to the strong appeal of our product portfolio and our commitment to delivering world-class mobility solutions in India and across global markets.'
Festive Season Outlook and New Launches
Garg indicated that the company expects sustained customer enthusiasm going into the festive season, buoyed in part by the opening of bookings for the Hyundai BAYON. The festive quarter — spanning Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali — is traditionally the strongest demand window for Indian automakers, and early indicators suggest both Mahindra and Hyundai are well-positioned to capitalise on the uptick.
What the Numbers Signal for the Auto Sector
The September data arrives against a backdrop of cautious optimism in India's auto industry. SUV demand — which has consistently outpaced the broader passenger vehicle market — continues to anchor growth at both companies. Notably, Mahindra's electric three-wheeler and Electric Origin SUV milestones signal that EV adoption is gaining traction beyond the passenger car segment. This is the third consecutive month that multiple OEMs have reported double-digit YoY growth, suggesting the demand recovery is structural rather than seasonal.
