New Delhi, Jan 14 (NationPress) Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Wednesday that a significant breakthrough has occurred as India’s oil firms have found oil in an onshore hydrocarbon block located in Abu Dhabi.
The discovery was achieved by Urja Bharat PTE Ltd (UBPL), a joint venture with equal stakes between India’s energy giant Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat PetroResources Ltd (BPCL). This successful identification of light crude oil in both the Shilaif play (XN 76) and the Habshan reservoir (XN 79 02S) signifies a crucial milestone in Indian Oil’s growing international upstream initiatives, as noted by the minister in a social media post.
“We are eager to progress and unveil further hydrocarbon potential within this concession,” the minister stated.
He emphasized that this discovery represents “a new milestone in India’s journey towards energy self-sufficiency under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
The minister also mentioned that these advancements demonstrate the commitment and technical prowess of our teams, reinforcing our resolve to enhance India’s energy security through strategic global partnerships.
On the domestic front, India's energy landscape is evolving as seven sedimentary basins are currently being explored using cutting-edge technology for oil and gas extraction throughout the nation.
Mission Anveshan, one of the most extensive seismic mapping initiatives in India’s history, has been launched, aiming for 20,000 ground-line kilometers (GLK) of seismic surveys, with over 8,000 GLK already completed.
Additionally, the offshore area of 1 million square kilometers is now accessible for oilfield exploration, and 99 percent of the 'No-Go' zones have been lifted.
The oil and gas blocks available under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) have attracted interest from both global and domestic energy firms, with Round X anticipated to establish new standards for participation and investment.
Previously, the minister indicated that 25 blocks have been designated under OALP-X; 154 exploration blocks remain active, and 14 new oil and gas discoveries have been recorded within the country.
