New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Indian personal computer (PC) sector experienced consistent growth in 2024, with overall shipments increasing by 3.8 percent year-over-year (YoY) to reach 14.4 million units, according to a recent report released on Monday.
This market encompasses desktops, notebooks, and workstations, and witnessed a robust recovery fueled by heightened demand from both consumer and commercial sectors.
The latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) highlights that the notebook category spearheaded this growth, showing a 4.5 percent YoY increase, while desktops reported a 1.8 percent YoY rise.
Among all categories, workstations exhibited the highest growth at 10.9 percent, indicating strong demand from businesses and professionals.
The last quarter of 2024 was particularly noteworthy, with the entire PC market expanding by 6.9 percent YoY.
The notebook segment distinguished itself with a growth of 9.6 percent YoY, while premium notebooks priced above $1,000 achieved an impressive growth of 13.8 percent.
The consumer segment displayed a moderate growth of 2.6 percent YoY throughout 2024 and 2.2 percent YoY in the fourth quarter.
According to Bharath Shenoy, research manager at IDC India & South Asia, 'The consumer PC market has been on a growth trajectory driven by gaming and AI-powered PCs.'
He further noted that the demand for gaming notebooks has surged, achieving double-digit growth in FY2024.
'Since mid-2024, shipments of AI-powered notebooks have risen significantly as the demand for relatively lower-end AI PCs powered by Intel Core Ultra processors and AMD Ryzen AI processors has steadily increased,' Shenoy added.
A significant driver of this growth has been the e-commerce sector, where sales through online retailers (eTailers) surged by 21.7 percent for the year and 29 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the report.
This increase was primarily due to vendors stocking their inventory ahead of major sales events, including year-end promotions and Republic Day sales in January.
On the other hand, the commercial segment showcased a stronger growth of 5.1 percent YoY in 2024, accelerating to 11.1 percent YoY in the last quarter.
Purchases made by the government through platforms like the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and demand from large enterprises contributed to a 10.6 percent YoY growth in both the enterprise and government sectors.
