The expansion of India's AI talent is also evident in its global developer engagement. According to worldwide statistics on GitHub AI projects, India ranked as the second-largest contributor in 2024, comprising 19.9 percent of all AI initiatives.
“This highlights the robustness of India's AI developer ecosystem. It also confirms the Government's commitment to extensive AI skilling, research, and innovation as part of the IndiaAI Mission,” stated Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
India's AI strategy stems from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making technology accessible to all. The objective is to tackle challenges specific to India while generating opportunities and jobs in the AI sector.
AI-related job roles span various industries such as IT, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, governance, and more. As AI adoption increases across these fields, the demand for skilled professionals is also on the rise.
The Indian government acknowledges this trend and has aligned its AI initiatives accordingly, which is reflected in global evaluations of India's AI workforce.
The 'Stanford AI Index Report 2025' indicates that India leads globally in AI talent acquisition, with an annual hiring rate of around 33 percent and ranks among the top countries for AI skill penetration.
Since 2016, the concentration of AI talent in India has surged more than threefold. The country is recognized among the top three nations in Stanford University’s Global AI Vibrancy Tool, showcasing its enhancing capabilities in AI talent and infrastructure.
The government has launched various initiatives to nurture the AI talent pipeline, such as ‘IndiaAI FutureSkills’, a key aspect of the IndiaAI mission focused on cultivating AI talent and research.
The government is backing 500 PhD scholars, 5,000 postgraduates, and 8,000 undergraduates for AI-related endeavors.
Additionally, IndiaAl Data and AI Labs are being established in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities through NIELIT to offer courses in AI, data curation, annotation, cleaning, and applied data science. Furthermore, 174 ITIs and Polytechnics across 27 states/UTs have been approved to initiate additional IndiaAl Data and AI Labs, as per the minister's statements.
Under the ‘FutureSkills PRIME’ initiative, the government is partnering with Nasscom to provide learners with essential skills in today’s rapidly changing digital landscape, including AI, Big Data, and Cloud Computing.
