Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated on Sunday that the strategy for a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) model is proving effective, as he commended an advanced model unveiled by the homegrown startup Sarvam AI.
Last year, this startup was chosen to develop the nation’s first foundational AI model. Out of 67 proposals, Sarvam AI was selected to construct India’s inaugural indigenous foundational model.
“Even the harshest critics are lauding the technologically superior model released by Sarvam as part of our AI initiative,” Vaishnaw remarked in a post on X.
He also mentioned that concurrently, “our talented young engineers are innovating in materials science, healthcare, and cybersecurity, which the world will recognize as groundbreaking models.”
Sarvam AI has developed top-tier text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and OCR models tailored for Indic languages.
In December of last year, Sarvam AI Co-Founder Pratyush Kumar presented multilingual AI systems under the IndiaAI Mission, featuring India’s first sovereign foundational Large Language Model (LLM) for Indian languages.
In a pivotal move to enhance India’s AI landscape, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the India AI Mission in 2024, with a budget allocation of Rs 10,300 crore. This funding, spread over the next five years, aims to accelerate various aspects of the IndiaAI mission.
Recently, PM Modi encouraged startups to harness AI for societal benefits. During a roundtable discussion with Indian AI startups at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, he advocated for making AI affordable, inclusive, and transparent.
He also emphasized that Indian AI models should be unique and should support local and indigenous content as well as regional languages.
PM Modi announced that India will host the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ from February 16-20, aiming to position the country significantly within the tech sector.
