Is Building Indigenous AI Rooted in Indian Languages Key to National Growth?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) As we navigate the era of artificial intelligence that influences governance, economic competitiveness, and citizen services, the government emphasized on Saturday the necessity of creating AI systems that are grounded in local languages, datasets, and regulatory frameworks. This approach is vital for ensuring that innovation resonates with national priorities and societal needs.
With India aiming to establish itself as a dominant player in the global digital landscape, there is a growing emphasis on developing AI technologies that are indigenous, inclusive, and tailored to the specific demands of the nation.
“AI models that are trained using Indian languages, localized data, and real-world contexts are fundamental to making technology accessible and pertinent to millions of citizens,” the government added.
Sarvam AI has become a prominent entity in this field. Founded with the mission of developing AI systems specifically for India, the company is crafting foundational AI models that cater to the country's linguistic diversity, enterprise requirements, and governance needs.
Their comprehensive AI platform has been conceived, launched, and managed entirely within India, thereby diminishing reliance on foreign AI resources.
During the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Union Minister Amit Shah remarked that Sarvam AI is a representation of why the future is favorable for India.
He highlighted that the organization is dedicated to ensuring technology reaches every citizen and aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat, where innovation empowers individuals and fortifies the nation.
Sarvam AI is among the twelve organizations chosen under the Innovation Centre framework of the IndiaAI Mission to create indigenous foundational AI models.
The company has secured funding and computing support totaling ₹246.72 crore for this initiative.
This government initiative aims to reinforce technological independence and encourage inclusive digital advancement.
The organization is developing extensive language and speech models designed for Indian applications, particularly in public service delivery.
Its AI offerings include “Bulbul,” a text-to-speech model supporting 11 Indian languages with 39 unique voices, and “Saaras,” a speech-to-text system that accommodates all 22 scheduled languages, including telephony audio and code-mixed speech.
Another innovative model, “Vision,” focuses on document comprehension across over 22 Indian languages, capable of processing mixed scripts and handwritten text.
By creating such India-centric AI systems, Sarvam AI intends to tackle enduring challenges related to multilingual communication, accessibility, and public service delivery.
The company’s models are crafted to enhance voice-based interactions, document processing, and citizen-centric digital solutions.
