Electrical engineers are now working on energy storage and smart-grid technologies, while software engineers are interfacing with hardware systems, cybersecurity, and physical infrastructure.
He stressed that graduates must move beyond narrowly defined specialisations and build the capacity to experiment, collaborate, and deliver practical solutions to real-world challenges. He also advocated for stronger emphasis on design thinking, field exposure, interdisciplinary projects, and prototyping within engineering education.
UPI and the Space Programme as Engineering Benchmarks
The Governor highlighted two specific examples of Indian engineering excellence. On the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), he argued that while it is widely perceived as a fintech innovation, it is underpinned by sophisticated engineering spanning interoperability, distributed systems, cybersecurity, real-time processing, and large-scale digital infrastructure. Similarly, he cited India's space programme as a demonstration of engineering excellence achieved despite resource and technology constraints — a model of doing more with less.
