New Delhi, June 1 (NationPress) The budget airline IndiGo has officially confirmed an MoU with Airbus to expand its order of wide-body aircraft by converting 30 of its purchase rights for 70 aircraft into a firm commitment.
This decision marks a significant milestone in the airline's strategy for international growth.
"We are finalizing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s," stated Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo. During a press conference held in the national capital, Elbers elaborated that from the initial option for 70 planes, they are now placing a firm order for 30 aircraft.
Last year, IndiGo made a strategic choice to enhance its fleet with widebody aircraft by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900s, which included purchase rights for an additional 70 aircraft.
The deliveries from the original order are projected to commence in 2027.
"Our plan is to add one aircraft weekly, aiming to double our fleet by the end of the decade," asserted the IndiGo CEO.
This strategic maneuver will empower IndiGo to broaden its horizons and extend its long-haul international routes, linking Indian metropolitan areas to various global destinations.
“This expansion will generate increased travel options for our customers, facilitating access to new international locations and enhancing flight availability to our partner airlines’ hubs,” the airline conveyed in a statement.
IndiGo’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be equipped with Rolls Royce’s Trent XWB engine.
The operational capability of this aircraft, combined with the efficiency of the Trent XWB engine, will provide IndiGo with unparalleled flexibility and reach as it enters the next chapter of addressing the swiftly evolving demands of the Indian market.
In March 2025, IndiGo initiated preparations for its long-haul operations by introducing six temporarily leased wide-body aircraft, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2026.
With a fleet exceeding 400 aircraft, the airline operates over 2,200 flights daily.
