New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) IndiGo Airlines has been recognized as the world’s second fastest-growing airline in terms of seat capacity, which saw an increase of 10.1 percent year-on-year, reaching over 134.9 million seats in 2024.
India's largest airline is ranked just after Qatar Airways, which achieved a 10.4 percent growth in seat capacity compared to the previous year, according to the latest statistics from the Official Airline Guide (OAG).
Furthermore, IndiGo has been designated as the fastest-growing airline globally concerning flight frequency growth, recording a 9.7 percent year-on-year increase in 2024. The airline's flight frequency reached 749,156 for the year, as the data indicates.
The OAG has also noted that IndiGo possesses one of the largest aircraft orders worldwide, with over 900 aircraft on order and being the largest recipient of 58 new Airbus aircraft during 2024. However, it mentions that the airline has a significant number (around 80 aircraft) currently inactive due to MRO-related supply chain issues.
While 88 percent of IndiGo's capacity is dedicated to domestic markets, expanding internationally is a critical part of the airline's strategy for 2024, focusing on regional markets in the Middle East and Thailand.
IndiGo's long-term objectives include establishing long-haul low-cost services - the airline is contemplating accelerating launch plans with wet lease aircraft slated for 2025.
In terms of financial performance, IndiGo reported a net profit of Rs 2,449 crore for the quarter ending in March 2025, marking an 18 percent decline compared to the same period last year. However, the airline's operational revenue rose by 14 percent to Rs 22,111 crore.
The total income for the quarter amounted to Rs 22,992.8 crore, reflecting a 14.6 percent increase from the previous year's quarter.
On the expense side, IndiGo's total expenses were Rs 20,465.7 crore, which is a 19.9 percent increase year-on-year.
Moreover, the airline’s EBITDA improved by 0.7 percent year-on-year, reaching Rs 5,178.6 crore.
For the reported quarter, IndiGo's load factor was 86.9 percent, surpassing the 85.8 percent reported for the same period last year.
