IndiGo Introduces Fuel Surcharge of Up to Rs 2,300 Starting March 14
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 13 (NationPress) – IndiGo, the largest airline in India, has declared that it will implement a fuel surcharge on both domestic and international flights starting from March 14. This decision comes in light of a significant hike in aviation turbine fuel prices, which is attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The surcharge will be assessed based on the route, ranging from Rs 425 to Rs 2,300.
This action is prompted by the rising operational costs faced by airlines due to the recent spike in jet fuel prices amid ongoing geopolitical instability in the Gulf region.
IndiGo has stated, "As India's premier airline, we are instituting a fuel surcharge on both domestic and international routes, effective from March 14, 2026." The airline further noted that this measure is a direct response to the notable increase in fuel costs, which has surged by over 85% according to the IATA's Jet Fuel Monitor.
The airline emphasized that this surcharge will apply to tickets for all flights starting from March 14.
IndiGo also highlighted that this decision was necessary due to the recent increases in aviation turbine fuel prices, which have heavily impacted their operational expenses.
In addition, Air India and Air India Express have also revealed their plans to introduce a fuel surcharge on flight tickets.
These airlines have cited rising operational costs as the reason for implementing the surcharge, which is directly linked to the increase in jet fuel prices.
The airline group mentioned that a fuel surcharge of ₹399 per ticket on domestic flights was initiated on March 12, with the same surcharge applicable to flights heading to various destinations in the South Asian region.
For international travel, the surcharge will vary by destination; flights to West Asia will incur an additional fee of $10 per ticket, while those traveling to Africa will face surcharges ranging from $30 to $90.
Routes to Southeast Asia will see surcharges between $20 and $60.
The airlines have indicated that the surcharge will be rolled out in phases across different domestic and international routes to adapt to the heightened fuel costs resulting from the regional geopolitical situation.
