Is Innovation Now Within Reach on Your Mobile Phone? Dr Jitendra Singh Explains
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 14 (NationPress) The innovation landscape in India has evolved to a point where opportunities are completely democratized and can be accessed via mobile phones, stated Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Saturday. He encouraged the youth to shift from the conventional goal of securing government jobs to exploring entrepreneurship.
During his address at the inaugural session of the Research–Industry–Startup–Entrepreneurship (RISE) Conclave 2026 in Chennai, Dr Singh emphasized that government employment should not be the sole aspiration for the youth in India.
He advocated for a significant change in mindset, focusing on innovation-driven entrepreneurship and job creation, noting that India has transitioned from being a latecomer to a global innovation leader.
The two-day conclave, taking place on February 14 and 15 at the Chennai Trade Centre, aims to unite research institutions, industry leaders, academia, and startups on a single platform.
The event seeks to synchronize laboratory research with industry requirements and market trends, under what the Minister referred to as a “Whole-of-Government for Whole-of-Society” approach.
Reflecting on his formative years in Chennai, Dr Singh characterized the city as a historic hub of learning and innovation.
He praised institutions like CSIR-CLRI, referring to them as emblems of national pride since Independence.
“Products developed at CLRI now enjoy a robust export presence, and CSIR laboratories have increasingly aligned their work with national development goals, rather than operating in isolation,” he remarked.
Highlighting the advancements in Tamil Nadu, the Minister mentioned that the state has received ample support through flagship central schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri SVANidhi, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, alongside the extension of Vande Bharat Express services.
“These initiatives illustrate recognition of Tamil Nadu’s contributions and potential,” he added.
Discussing the growth of startups in India, Dr Singh noted that in 2014, there were approximately 350 recognized startups, whereas today, the figure has surpassed 200,000, generating over 2.1 million jobs.
He mentioned that nearly 69% of the beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana are women, and thousands of startups are led by women.
India’s position in the Global Innovation Index has improved from 81 to 38, and the country now ranks sixth worldwide in patent applications, with a majority of patents being filed by Indian residents working domestically.
