Mumbai, April 7 (NationPress) In an effort to enhance governance and improve disaster management, the Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved two significant initiatives: the creation of the Maharashtra Geotechnology Application Centre (MahaGeoTech) and the launch of the Maharashtra Resilience Development Programme.

The establishment of MahaGeoTech aims to boost administrative effectiveness through advanced technology.

This specialized entity will function as a center for geospatial innovation and data-centric decision-making. It will be divided into four main sectors, including modern technology, research and training, geospatial innovation and entrepreneurship, and administration and accounts.

The modern technology sector will prioritize areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, the Internet of Things, Image Processing, and Photogrammetry, ensuring data quality, integrity, and security protocols are met.

Additionally, it will oversee the creation and upkeep of geospatial portals, the design of software applications, and the integration of various datasets to tackle complex administrative challenges.

The Research and Training Division will focus on research and development in geospatial technology while offering academic programs for students and professionals.

Located in Mumbai, this institute will receive an initial funding of Rs 25 crore. Its goal is to optimize government operations by delivering accurate spatial analytics and nurturing a culture of technological innovation across state departments.

Moreover, the Maharashtra Cabinet has also approved the Maharashtra Resilience Financing Programme, a pioneering initiative designed to leverage capital and international funding to reduce the effects of disasters.

This programme will utilize a Rs 165 crore fund sourced from the World Bank. It will provide relief to disaster-affected individuals through home loan concessions.

In addition, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, workers in the unorganised sector, women entrepreneurs, and small construction firms will benefit from tailored credit options and insurance coverage.

The Maharashtra Institution for Transformation will act as the implementation body responsible for managing financial assistance during floods, heatwaves, and cyclones.

This programme will particularly focus on the Krishna and Panchganga river basins, with comprehensive strategies developed to mitigate flood risks in Kolhapur, Sangli, and Ichalkaranji.

The Maharashtra Soil and Water Conservation Corporation will function as the project implementation team in these river areas.

A Project Appraisal Committee, co-chaired by the Minister for Disaster Management and the Minister for Water Resources, has been established to oversee progress and ensure successful execution, according to government announcements.

By merging advanced geospatial data with a solid financial safety net, the Maharashtra government aims to create a state that is both technologically advanced and resilient to disasters, as highlighted in the official statement.
