New Delhi, June 5 (NationPress) Maruti Suzuki India Limited achieved a remarkable milestone by dispatching 5.18 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in the financial year 2024-25, emphasizing its dedication to enhancing green logistics, as stated in a company announcement made on Thursday.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki utilizes railways to deliver vehicles to over 20 hubs, reaching more than 600 cities across India. The port locations of Mundra and Pipavav, which the company uses for exports, are also accessible via rail transport.
One of the primary benefits of utilizing railways is that it provides a low-emission and energy-efficient transportation method. Additionally, it alleviates road congestion.
Commenting on this achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, stated: "Our key focus is on reducing carbon emissions in both our products and operations. Maruti Suzuki was the first company in India to secure an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license in 2013. Since then, we have transported nearly 24 lakh vehicles via rail. By FY 2030-31, we aim to boost the share of our vehicle dispatches through railways to 35 percent."
Since FY 2014-15, the volume of vehicle dispatches via railways by Maruti Suzuki has increased nearly eightfold. In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at the company’s facility in Gujarat. At present, Maruti Suzuki operates over 40 flexi deck rakes, each capable of transporting around 300 vehicles per trip, as per the company report.
The cumulative total of 24 lakh (2.4 million) vehicles dispatched by Maruti Suzuki via railways since FY 2014-15 has contributed to avoiding over 1.8 lakh tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions and saving more than 630 lakh (63 million) litres of fuel.
Meanwhile, the volume of cargo carried by Indian Railways has surged from 1,055 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 1,617 million tonnes in 2024-25, making it the second-largest cargo-carrying railway globally. This transition of cargo from road to rail has reportedly saved the country over 143 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, equating to the environmental benefit of planting 121 crore trees.
