Nashwauk, MN (USA), March 31 (NationPress) Mesabi Metallics Company LLC, supported by the Essar Group, has revealed on Tuesday that it has secured a new $520 million senior secured credit facility with Valor Mining Credit Partners II, L.P. (VMP II). This fund, which is dedicated to mining and critical minerals, is managed by Breakwall Capital LP alongside Vitol as the company progresses towards its commercial operations expected later this year.
Spanning over 16,000 acres in northern Minnesota, Mesabi Metallics is in the final stages of completing a monumental $2.5 billion merchant Direct Reduction (DR) grade iron ore mine and pellet plant. This facility is set to bolster a crucial segment of the United States steel supply chain.
With more than 750 construction workers currently employed on-site, this initiative stands out as one of the most significant private-sector industrial investments in Minnesota's history.
The Essar Group has made substantial contributions, having invested over $2 billion in equity into the project. Furthermore, the initiative has garnered backing from the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM), highlighting the increasing federal acknowledgment of its strategic importance to U.S. manufacturing and supply chain security, particularly for sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, shipbuilding, and defense.
Joe Broking, President and CEO of Mesabi Metallics, stated, “The collaboration with Breakwall marks a significant achievement for Mesabi Metallics.” He emphasized, “We are introducing a new American source of premium quality DR-grade iron ore that will assist U.S. steelmakers in reducing their dependence on imported raw materials and foreign supply chains. America is already leading in the next generation of Electric Arc Furnace-based steelmaking, which is the most environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient method of steel production. Mesabi Metallics will generate hundreds of high-quality jobs in northern Minnesota over the coming decades and will facilitate the reshoring of American industrial supremacy.”
Daniel Flannery, President and Managing Partner of Breakwall, remarked, “Mesabi Metallics exemplifies the caliber of high-quality companies and extensive mining projects we aim to collaborate with—anchored by a long-term resource in an advanced stage of development, with strategic significance for critical industrial growth. We anticipate expanding our partnership with Mesabi Metallics and supporting them on their journey.”
Jamie Brodsky, Co-CEO and Managing Partner of Breakwall, added, “This agreement further illustrates the depth of our collaboration with Vitol, merging credit solutions with global resource marketing expertise to provide a range of solutions for premier companies like Mesabi Metallics and world-class operators such as the Essar Group.”
