Nashwauk, MN (United States), April 6 (NationPress) – Mesabi Metallics Company LLC, with backing from the Essar Group, has successfully secured $150 million in financing from the Macquarie Group. This funding will support the projected Q3 2026 launch of its large-scale Direct Reduction (DR) grade iron ore mine and pellet plant in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

This recent funding marks an important milestone in the momentum surrounding this crucial American iron ore project.

The financing follows a notable $520 million senior secured credit facility that Mesabi recently announced in partnership with Breakwall Capital, further enhancing the project's strong forward momentum.

Additionally, Mesabi has garnered support from the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM), underscoring the project’s increasing significance to sectors such as U.S. manufacturing, infrastructure, automotive, shipbuilding, and defense.

As the United States aims to bolster its industrial supply chains and minimize dependence on imported raw materials, Mesabi Metallics is developing a vital new domestic source of DR-grade iron ore.

Spanning over 16,000 acres in Northern Minnesota, Mesabi is working on a $2.5 billion world-class merchant DR-grade iron ore mine and pellet plant, designed to supply the next generation of electric arc furnaces in American steelmaking, recognized as the cleanest and most energy-efficient method for producing high-quality steel.

Currently, more than 800 construction workers are engaged on-site, making this project one of the largest private sector industrial investments in Minnesota's history. The Essar Group has already contributed over $2 billion in equity to this endeavor.

“This financing from Macquarie represents a significant leap forward for Mesabi Metallics and enhances the strong momentum we've established through our recent financial collaborations,” stated Joe Broking, President and CEO of Mesabi Metallics.

“Together, these financial transactions highlight the growing confidence in our project’s quality, scale, and strategic relevance as we strive to create a new American source of DR-grade iron ore to fortify domestic steel supply chains and reduce reliance on imports,” Broking elaborated.

“Macquarie has maintained a long-standing financing relationship with the Essar Group, and we are delighted to extend this partnership to their metals and mining ventures in the U.S.,” remarked Mike Burns, Senior Managing Director in Macquarie Group’s Commodities and Global Markets division.

“Mesabi is advancing a high-quality, strategically significant project for the U.S. steel industry, and we are excited to support the company in the long run,” Burns concluded.
