Udyam Portal Sees 7.83 Crore MSME Registrations, 34.50 Crore Jobs Created: Minister
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) Approximately 7.83 crore Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have registered on the Udyam Registration portal since its inception in 2020. During this timeframe, 1.37 lakh MSMEs have ceased operations, which represents a mere 0.17 percent of the total MSMEs in closure, as reported to Parliament on Thursday.
According to the records, the 34.50 crore jobs generated by these registered MSMEs as of February 28, 2026, were mentioned by Union MSME Minister Jitin Ram Manjhi in response to a Lok Sabha inquiry.
Enterprises may deregister for various reasons, including changes in ownership, lack of need for certification, duplicate registrations, or business closure, as clarified by the minister.
“The government bolsters State and UT efforts through numerous schemes, programs, and policy initiatives aimed at fostering and promoting MSMEs, such as the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme, Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises, Cluster Development Programme, Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance, SRI Fund, PM Vishwakarma, and MSME Champions Scheme,” Manjhi elaborated.
To facilitate credit, an Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) worth Rs 5 lakh crore was introduced for businesses, including MSMEs, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The scheme was in effect until 31.03.2023, during which 1.13 crore guarantees were provided to MSMEs,” the minister stated.
As per a research report from the State Bank of India dated 23.01.2023 on ECLGS, nearly 14.6 lakh MSME accounts were preserved, with about 98.3 percent belonging to Micro and Small Enterprises.
Furthermore, non-tax benefits are offered for three years when there’s an upward change in MSME status.
Notably, an equity infusion of Rs 50,000 crore through the Self Reliant India (SRI) Fund has a provision of Rs 10,000 crore from the Government of India and Rs 40,000 crore sourced from Private Equity/Venture Capital funds.
This initiative aims to provide growth capital to deserving and eligible MSME units.
The Ministry of MSME implements the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), which is a credit-linked subsidy program designed to create self-employment opportunities through the establishment of micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector, particularly assisting traditional artisans and unemployed youth, both rural and urban.
Among the total PMEGP beneficiaries, 39 percent are women, receiving a higher subsidy of 35 percent compared to up to 25 percent for non-special categories, as noted by the minister.
