Is Elon Musk Really Building a Self-Growing City on the Moon in Under 10 Years?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced on Monday his ambitious plan to establish a self-sustaining city on the Moon within a decade. This endeavor is expected to pave the way for a human settlement on Mars in approximately 20 years.
As the world's wealthiest individual, Musk pointed out that SpaceX has redirected its efforts towards constructing a self-sufficient city on the Moon, noting that this goal could be achieved in under 10 years, while the timeline for Mars is over 20 years.
In a recent update on his X social media platform, Musk reiterated SpaceX's mission: to extend consciousness and life as we know it beyond Earth.
He elaborated, saying, "Travel to Mars can only occur when the planets align every 26 months, which involves a six-month journey. In contrast, we can launch to the Moon every ten days, with a two-day travel time. This enables us to develop a Moon city much more swiftly than one on Mars."
However, Musk also emphasized that SpaceX will endeavor to establish a Martian city, starting that process in about five to seven years, although he stated that the top priority is safeguarding the future of civilization, making lunar development faster.
Last September, Musk declared that the inaugural uncrewed Starship mission to Mars is set to launch in two years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. The Starship is recognized as the most powerful rocket globally and will facilitate human travel to the Moon and eventually to Mars.
The tech mogul noted that the first Starships to Mars would be launched in two years during the next Earth-Mars transfer window, aiming for uncrewed missions to validate landing capabilities. If successful, crewed missions could follow within four years.
Musk predicts that the rate of flights will increase significantly thereafter, with a vision of creating a self-sustaining city within a 20-year timeframe.
