Government Unveils New Order to Enhance Natural Gas Infrastructure and Accessibility
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) In a significant move to enhance the natural gas infrastructure and facilitate business operations, the government has issued the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
This order, enacted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, establishes a clear and efficient framework for the construction and expansion of pipelines throughout the nation. It aims to tackle approval delays and land access issues, allowing for quicker development of natural gas infrastructure, particularly in residential sectors.
Effective immediately, this order introduces a comprehensive, transparent, and investor-friendly framework that enhances gas distribution and accelerates infrastructure growth, ensuring equitable access to cleaner energy sources.
The primary goal of this order is to encourage the growth of piped natural gas (PNG) networks, enhance last-mile connectivity, and support a transition towards cleaner fuels for cooking, transportation, and industrial applications, thereby fortifying energy security and aiding India’s shift to a gas-based economy.
An official statement indicated that this order responds to long-standing challenges in infrastructure development and regulatory uncertainty while elevating natural gas to a pivotal transition fuel position.
“Fundamentally, this reform aims to significantly improve the ease of doing business by streamlining processes, minimizing regulatory obstacles, and establishing a predictable and transparent environment for all stakeholders,” the statement read.
This reform establishes a clear, uniform framework for the laying, construction, operation, and expansion of pipeline infrastructure, introducing standardized processes and timelines to reduce confusion and administrative discretion.
Additionally, it guarantees timely approvals with deemed approval provisions to eliminate procedural delays; a unified framework across jurisdictions to decrease fragmentation in permissions, and the removal of arbitrary fees, ensuring transparency and cost predictability.
The government reiterated its commitment to enhancing the role of natural gas within India’s energy landscape and fostering an environment conducive to investment, innovation, and sustainability.
