Guwahati, April 20 (NationPress) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reached remarkable milestones in track modernization, upkeep, and safety during the financial year 2025-26, establishing several new records, officials revealed on Monday.
These achievements underscore NFR's unwavering dedication to improving operational efficiency, passenger safety, and infrastructure reliability, stated NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma.
A significant technological advancement was achieved with the implementation of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing for evaluating Flash Butt Welds in the third quarter of 2024-25.
Continuing this progress, a total of 53,544 welds were assessed throughout 2025-26, fortifying track safety and reliability through sophisticated inspection techniques.
Sharma noted that NFR recorded its highest-ever track renewal rate, accomplishing 457 Complete Track Renewal units during 2025-26. This represents a remarkable 33.07 percent rise compared to the previous year’s total of 343.08 units.
Moreover, rail renewals of 449.42 track kilometers were finalized, marking another historical achievement for the zone. Sleeper renewals hit 465.02 track kilometers, demonstrating significant progress towards the annual goal of 502.
To enhance track structure further, a record-breaking 9.57 lakh cubic meters of ballast was supplied and installed during the year, which is 6 percent more than the previous year's figure of 9.01 lakh cubic meters.
This enhancement has notably contributed to improved riding quality and overall track stability.
The renewal of track fittings also exceeded expectations, achieving cumulative progress of 299.61 km against a target of 205 km, surpassing it by an impressive 46.15 percent.
Additionally, 4,312 points were tamped, exceeding the annual target of 4,150 by 3.9 percent, ensuring smoother train operations and reduced maintenance needs.
According to Sharma, operational efficiency was further improved with increased loop line speeds at 39 stations, upgraded from 15 km/h to 30 km/h, surpassing the previous year’s enhancement at 21 stations.
Furthermore, deep screening of 258 turnouts was completed, exceeding the annual target by 47.43 percent, thereby boosting track resilience and longevity.
In the domain of track safety monitoring, Ultrasonic Flaw Detection testing covered an extensive 20,212.61 km, surpassing the annual target of 19,217 km. NFR also successfully rectified 23 track layouts, exceeding its target and enhancing operational safety and flexibility, the Chief Public Relations Officer added.
Safety infrastructure saw a significant improvement with the installation of 154.53 km of safety fencing, exceeding the annual target of 100 km by 54.53 percent. This initiative is crucial in preventing trespassing and ensuring safer railway operations.
