New Delhi, Sep 15 (NationPress) The Income Tax Department announced on Monday that over 7 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been submitted for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26, as the deadline of September 15 approaches.
In a message on the social media platform X, the Department expressed appreciation to taxpayers and tax professionals for contributing to this achievement and encouraged individuals who have yet to file their returns to do so promptly.
“More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed thus far, and the count continues. We are grateful to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this significant milestone and urge those who have not yet filed their ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so without delay,” it stated.
The Department reassured taxpayers that assistance is available 24/7 for filing returns, making tax payments, and accessing other related services.
“Our helpdesk operates around the clock, offering support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and Twitter/X,” it added.
This clarification follows the Department's dismissal of rumors regarding another deadline extension.
On Sunday, it labeled reports suggesting that the due date would be postponed to September 30 as “fake news,” reiterating that September 15 remains the final date.
“False information is circulating that the deadline for filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been pushed further to 30.09.2025,” the Department stated on Sunday.
“The deadline for filing ITRs is still 15.09.2025. Taxpayers are encouraged to rely solely on official updates from @IncomeTaxIndia,” the Department emphasized.
Earlier in May, the government had extended the deadline for non-audit cases from July 31 to September 15 for AY 2025-26.
With the increase in ITR filings, the Department noted that the rising numbers are indicative of enhanced tax compliance and a growing taxpayer base in the country.
