PLI 2.0 Initiative for IT Hardware Achieves ₹10,000 Crore Production and 3,900 Jobs in 18 Months

New Delhi, Jan 11 (NationPress) The production-linked incentive (PLI) 2.0 initiative for IT Hardware has recorded a remarkable ₹10,000 crore in production and generated 3,900 jobs within merely 18 months of its launch, as disclosed by the government on Saturday.
India's electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed significant growth over the last decade, with total production escalating from ₹2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to an estimated ₹9.8 lakh crore by 2024.
Mobile manufacturing alone has surged to ₹4.4 lakh crore, with exports projected at ₹1.5 lakh crore in 2024. Approximately 98 percent of mobile devices utilized in India are now produced domestically, with smartphones ranking as the fourth largest export item from India, as stated in the announcement.
With the assistance of MeitY, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a significant hub for electronics manufacturing, contributing ₹1.3 lakh crore to production and accounting for 30 percent of India's exports.
In a significant advancement for India's electronics manufacturing landscape, the production of laptops has commenced in the country, with Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurating Syrma SGS Technology's cutting-edge laptop assembly line on Friday.
The newly established assembly line aims to produce an initial 100,000 laptops annually, with a scalable capacity of up to 1 million units over the next 1-2 years. Syrma SGS currently operates four manufacturing facilities in Chennai, with Unit 3 now launching laptop production, as reported by the IT Ministry.
Syrma SGS has formed a partnership with Micro-Star International (MSI), a prominent Taiwanese technology firm, to manufacture high-quality laptops in India, serving both domestic and international markets.
Within a brief period of 18 months since the initiation of PLI 2.0, the first unit is now operational in Tamil Nadu, signifying the advent of “Made in India” laptops.
This program, part of the PLI 2.0 initiative for IT Hardware, underscores India's expanding capabilities in high-value electronics production and reinforces the country’s self-sufficiency in IT hardware, as per an official statement.
The facility is expected to create 150-200 specialized jobs in electronics manufacturing by FY26, significantly impacting both the regional economy of Tamil Nadu and the national economy of India. These positions are anticipated to have a cascading effect, shaping and enhancing the future workforce in the industry.
The laptops manufactured will adhere to international quality standards, demonstrating India’s growing technical and manufacturing capabilities, according to an official statement.
