Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is set to announce an allocation of ₹18,907 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) for the financial year 2026-27 on Sunday, 11 May 2025, coinciding with the scheme's 25th anniversary and the national launch of PMGSY-IV. The announcement will be made at Bhairunda in Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh, according to an official ministry statement.

Key Allocations and Coverage

Of the total outlay, ₹830 crore has been earmarked specifically for Madhya Pradesh. Chouhan will hand over approval letters and financial allocations under PMGSY-IV to Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav for 973 roads covering a total length of 2,117 kilometres across the state. These projects are expected to benefit 987 habitations in Madhya Pradesh.

PM-JANMAN Initiative Gets a Push

Alongside the PMGSY-IV launch, road projects covering more than 384 kilometres under the PM-JANMAN initiative will also receive approval, directly benefiting 168 backward habitations. The PM-JANMAN scheme targets India's most underserved tribal and marginalised communities, making this a significant step toward last-mile connectivity for vulnerable populations.

The ministry described the silver jubilee event not merely as a government function but as a large-scale celebration of rural transformation and social inclusion. According to the official statement, the programme reflects "the commitment to taking development to the last mile through infrastructure expansion." Chouhan has consistently maintained that a village road is "not merely a means of transportation, but a pathway to prosperity, education, healthcare, markets, employment and a life of dignity."

Why Rural Connectivity Matters

The PMGSY, launched in 2000, has over the past two-and-a-half decades connected thousands of previously isolated villages with all-weather paved roads, enabling access to agricultural markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. PMGSY-IV represents the latest phase of this long-running programme, designed to deepen connectivity in areas still underserved by the earlier three phases. This comes amid growing policy emphasis on rural infrastructure as a driver of agricultural productivity and inclusive economic growth. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav is also expected to participate in the event at Bhairunda.
