Is Priya Kapur Taking Legal Action Against Her Sister-in-Law?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 21 (NationPress) Priya Kapur, the spouse of the late entrepreneur Sunjay Kapur, has filed a criminal defamation lawsuit against her sister-in-law, Mandhira Kapur Smith, and another individual, claiming they have engaged in a prolonged campaign of false statements and public attacks directed at her through various digital platforms, podcasts, and media discussions.
On Wednesday, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at the Patiala House Courts conducted an in-camera hearing, during which Priya Kapur presented her statement.
The lawsuit contends that interviews and content disseminated via podcasts, which were later republished by sections of the media, are not only false but also misleading and defamatory, resulting in significant damage to her reputation.
As per the complaint, the alleged defamatory statements include personal attacks and assertions presented as facts, despite the issues being under judicial consideration.
Priya Kapur maintains that these statements constitute criminal defamation and indicate an effort to tarnish her image and harass her through public channels instead of through appropriate legal avenues.
In related legal matters, Priya Kapur is awaiting proceedings before the Supreme Court.
On January 16, the apex court issued a notice to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor regarding an application submitted by Priya Kapur, which requests certified copies of records related to the 2016 divorce proceedings involving her and Sunjay Kapur.
During an in-chamber hearing, a single-judge bench led by Justice A.S. Chandurkar instructed Karisma Kapoor to respond to Priya Kapur's application within a two-week timeframe.
Priya Kapur has requested certified copies of all documents associated with the divorce case, including the divorce petition, the pleadings from both parties, orders from the Supreme Court, and specifically the settlement made between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur in 2016.
In her application, Priya Kapur argues that having access to the complete divorce records, particularly the terms of settlement concerning financial arrangements and custody, is critical for the effective resolution of an estate dispute currently pending in the Delhi High Court.
A single-judge bench led by Justice Jyoti Singh is yet to deliver a verdict on a petition from Karisma Kapoor’s children, who are seeking a share in their late father Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate.
Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Kapoor, have alleged that the will dated March 21, 2025, which bequeaths Sunjay Kapur’s entire personal estate to Priya Kapur, is fraudulent and part of a 'criminal conspiracy' designed to exclude them and their grandmother, Rani Kapur, from their inheritance.
