Rajasthan logs 1.64 million European tourist arrivals in four years, UK leads
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rajasthan recorded 1.637 million foreign tourist visits from Europe's top 10 source countries between 2022 and 2025, with the United Kingdom and France emerging as the leading markets, according to data from the Rajasthan Tourism Department. The figures mark a sustained four-year climb, underscoring the desert state's growing appeal among international travellers.
Year-on-Year Growth in European Arrivals
European tourist arrivals to Rajasthan rose sharply from 140,204 in 2022 to 420,104 in 2023, then climbed further to 534,409 in 2024 and reached 542,205 in 2025. The cumulative four-year total from Europe's top 10 source countries stands at 1,636,922 visits, according to the department's country-wise data.
The United Kingdom and France together account for the bulk of European traffic, registering 388,898 and 388,895 visits respectively over the four-year period. Germany contributed 239,023 visits, followed by Italy with 220,778 and Spain with 143,157. The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, and Russia also feature among the leading European source markets.
UK Arrivals More Than Quadruple
The growth trajectory from the United Kingdom is particularly striking. Visits increased from 29,532 in 2022 to 133,978 in 2025 — a rise of more than 4.5 times in just four years. France recorded comparable momentum, with arrivals climbing from 34,999 to 131,270 over the same period. These figures suggest that Rajasthan's sustained presence at international travel marts is translating into measurable demand from Western European markets.
Asian Markets: Japan Outpaces China
Among Asian source markets, Japan has emerged as a significant contributor. Between 2022 and 2025, Rajasthan recorded 71,886 tourist visits from Japan, compared with 15,771 from China. Together, the two countries accounted for 87,657 visits over the four years. In 2025 alone, Japan sent 25,250 visitors while China's figure stood at 5,486.
Beyond Forts and Palaces: Tourism Commissioner's Strategy
Tourism Commissioner Rukmani Riar said that sustained international promotion and participation in leading global tourism platforms were essential to positioning Rajasthan as a premier destination in the international tourism landscape. She noted that the state was actively broadening its tourism identity beyond its renowned forts and palaces to include wildlife, rural experiences, folk culture, handicrafts, spiritual tourism, eco-tourism, and experiential travel.
Senior Additional Director of Rajasthan Tourism, Anand Kumar Tripathi, said that the state's continued participation in international travel marts was part of its long-term global branding strategy. 'These platforms provide valuable opportunities to present Rajasthan's tourism products to international audiences and strengthen its visibility in key source markets,' he said, adding that the encouraging arrival figures from major European countries reinforced the importance of continued international outreach.
What's Next for Rajasthan Tourism
The department is working to promote wildlife, rural tourism, folk culture, religious destinations, and emerging experiential tourism products in overseas markets alongside traditional heritage attractions. This comes amid intensifying competition among Indian states for international tourist spend, with destinations such as Kerala and Goa also investing heavily in global outreach. Rajasthan's ability to diversify beyond its heritage circuit and attract repeat visitors will likely determine whether the current growth trajectory holds through 2026 and beyond.
