Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has significantly contributed to the development of the ‘INS Taragiri’—the fourth stealth frigate under Project 17A—recently commissioned into the Indian Navy, as announced by the Maharatna PSU on Saturday.
This 6,670-tonne frigate was inaugurated in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam.
Engineered by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the ship is designed for multi-role operations and boasts advanced stealth features.
SAIL confirmed that it provided the complete requirement of approximately 4,000 tonnes of specialized steel plates essential for the warship's construction.
The steel was fabricated at its plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela, showcasing SAIL’s prowess in producing high-end defense-grade materials.
INS Taragiri incorporates over 75 percent indigenous content and features cutting-edge systems such as radar, sonar, and missile platforms—including BrahMos and surface-to-air missiles—enhancing its operational capabilities for combat and maritime security.
At the commissioning ceremony, Rajnath Singh remarked that the warship symbolizes India’s advancing technological prowess and commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
He emphasized the necessity of a robust naval capability, as a large portion of India’s trade and energy security relies on maritime routes.
The vessel is designed for sustained high-speed operations and extended deployments at sea, allowing it to execute a variety of missions, including high-intensity combat, anti-piracy efforts, coastal surveillance, and humanitarian aid.
SAIL has previously supplied specialized steel for crucial naval platforms, including INS Vikrant and other vessels within the Project 17A series.
The commissioning of 'INS Taragiri' is a significant advancement in India’s initiative for defense indigenization and fortifying maritime capabilities.
On Thursday, SAIL’s shares closed approximately 1 percent lower at Rs 154.40 on the NSE.
