Texmaco Rail, Touax and TrinityRail to invest in 100 rakes in India
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited, France's Touax Group, and US-based TrinityRail Global Inc. have forged a strategic three-way partnership to build an integrated railcar leasing platform in India, the companies announced on Wednesday, 29 July. The alliance is backed by a commitment to invest in 100 new railway rakes over the next three to five years, targeting the country's fast-growing rail freight sector.
Structure of the Deal
Under the agreement, TrinityRail Global will acquire a proposed 32 per cent equity stake in Touax Texmaco Railcar Leasing Private Limited (TTRL), the existing joint venture between Touax Group and Texmaco Rail. Both Touax and Texmaco currently hold 34 per cent equity each in TTRL, and the entry of TrinityRail reshapes the ownership structure into a balanced three-way arrangement.
What the Partnership Covers
The expanded collaboration is designed to pool expertise across wagon manufacturing, leasing, financing, engineering, maintenance, and lifecycle management. The partners say the platform will deliver end-to-end rail mobility solutions at a time when India is aggressively pushing freight traffic off roads and onto rail.
Saroj Kumar Poddar, Chairman of Texmaco Rail & Engineering, described the venture's scope at a media briefing: 'The idea of this joint venture is to offer integrated rail solutions encompassing design, manufacturing, financing, leasing, maintenance and lifecycle engineering.'
Why India, Why Now
India's rail freight market has drawn sustained international attention as the government scales up infrastructure investment and logistics modernisation. Fabrice Walewski, General Partner and Chief Executive Officer of Touax Group, noted that Touax has operated in India for more than three decades through its container leasing business. 'We are here in India for more than 30 years already in the leasing of the container activity. And it has been a growing market. We work with Shipping Corporation of India and other shipping lines, calling the port of India,' Walewski said.
This long-standing presence gives Touax established relationships with Indian port operators and shipping lines — a commercial foundation the new three-way platform is expected to build upon.
Impact on India's Freight Ecosystem
The plan to deploy 100 new railway rakes over three to five years represents a meaningful addition to India's rolling stock capacity. Private railcar leasing remains a nascent but growing segment in India, and a tripartite platform combining a domestic manufacturer, a European leasing specialist, and a US rolling-stock firm could set a new benchmark for integrated freight solutions in the market.
This comes amid broader government efforts to raise the share of rail in India's freight mix and reduce logistics costs as a percentage of GDP. With sectoral execution details yet to be disclosed, all eyes will be on how quickly TTRL can operationalise the expanded fleet.
