  • Encourages developers to integrate digital infrastructure early.
  • Supports India's Digital India vision.

New Delhi, Aug 13 (NationPress) The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) unveiled the Manual for Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity on Wednesday, marking the nation's inaugural standardized framework aimed at assessing how well buildings are prepared for high-speed, dependable digital access.

With over 80 percent of mobile data usage occurring indoors, and the signals of 4G and 5G often compromised by contemporary construction materials, having robust in-building networks is now crucial for work, education, healthcare, and everyday digital services.

Poor indoor connectivity adversely impacts consumer experience and the general quality of service.

“In the 21st century, digital connectivity is no longer a luxury; it is a fundamental infrastructure, similar to electricity or water. Today, it fuels growth, innovation, and opportunities. This framework represents a pivotal move towards ensuring that every building in India aligns with the Digital India vision, enabling more citizens to fully engage in our connected economy and establishing the groundwork for inclusive national progress,” stated Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of TRAI.

Created under the Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity Regulations, 2024, the manual introduces a consistent assessment method for Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies (DCRAs) and acts as a reference for Property Managers (PMs) and Service Providers to plan, implement, and sustain future-ready Digital Connectivity Infrastructure (DCI).

The document also outlines clear, standardized criteria for property ratings, encompassing fibre readiness, in-building mobile coverage, Wi-Fi availability, broadband speeds, and overall user experience, empowering buyers, tenants, and businesses to make educated choices based on actual digital connectivity performance.

Furthermore, it promotes developers to embed robust digital infrastructure from the initial design and construction phases.

In the last decade, India has experienced a swift digital transformation that has changed how citizens work, learn, access healthcare, and interact with public services. Reliable digital infrastructure is now essential for driving economic growth, innovation, and social welfare. Given that the majority of data consumption occurs indoors, ensuring strong in-building digital connectivity has become vital.

To tackle this issue, TRAI announced the Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity Regulations, 2024 on 25 October 2024, establishing a standardized, collaborative framework for evaluating DCI.

Point of View

I believe TRAI's new manual is a significant step in enhancing India's digital infrastructure. It addresses pressing issues of indoor connectivity and sets a benchmark for future developments, ensuring that we are not left behind in the global digital landscape.
