New Delhi, Oct 21 (NationPress) The Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) initiative has successfully catered to over 1.56 crore passengers through 3.23 lakh UDAN flights in its nine-year journey, as reported by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Tuesday.
As part of this initiative, 649 routes have been activated, linking 93 unserved and underserved airports, which include 15 heliports and 2 water aerodromes.
In addition, to aid airline operators and enhance regional infrastructure, the Government has allocated over Rs 4,300 crore as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) and invested Rs 4,638 crore in airport development under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).
The ministry is commemorating the 9th anniversary of the Regional Connectivity Scheme.
During the event, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha emphasized that UDAN, which commenced on October 21, 2016, under the National Civil Aviation Policy, has been a groundbreaking initiative designed to make air travel more affordable and accessible for the general public.
The inaugural UDAN flight, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 27, 2017, connecting Shimla and Delhi, marked the beginning of a new chapter in regional aviation connectivity, he noted.
The Secretary reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to extending the program beyond April 2027 with an expanded UDAN Framework, which aims to enhance connectivity to hilly, North-Eastern, and aspirational regions and develop approximately 120 new destinations.
As per the ministry, a significant recent development has been the launch of Comprehensive Guidelines for Seaplane Operations in August 2024, along with the unveiling of UDAN 5.5, a special bidding round for seaplanes and helicopters.
Within this round, Letters of Intent have been issued for 150 routes connecting 30 water aerodromes across various coastal and island regions.
The UDAN initiative is not merely a scheme; it serves as a catalyst for transformation and reflects India’s commitment to making air travel inclusive, sustainable, and a vital component of our development narrative, as noted by the ministry.
