Key Takeaways

  • UIDAI and IIIT-Hyderabad host a biometric challenge.
  • Prize pool totals Rs 7.7 lakhs.
  • Focus on fingerprint authentication algorithms.
  • Secure evaluation process with anonymized data.
  • Future challenges for iris and facial authentication are planned.

New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), in partnership with IIIT-Hyderabad, has initiated a comprehensive competition aimed at evaluating fingerprint-based authentication solutions within biometric algorithms, according to the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

This competition welcomes global researchers and developers to refine their biometric models utilizing UIDAI's exclusive, field-collected dataset, aiming to boost accuracy in real-world environments.

The initial phase of the Biometric SDK Benchmarking challenge concentrates on fingerprint authentication. It requires the testing of 1:1 matching algorithms specifically for children aged 5-10 years, with updates anticipated after a span of 5-10 years.

This challenge will allow participants to gain insights into the performance of their algorithms, which will be assessed against an extensive anonymized biometric dataset within a secure UIDAI sandbox.

“UIDAI guarantees that participant submissions are evaluated in a secure manner, with anonymized datasets and no data sharing with participants,” stated the Ministry.

“The challenge features prizes totaling Rs 7.7 lakhs ($9,000) and the chance to collaborate with UIDAI in enhancing biometric technologies,” it further added.

Commencing on March 25, the challenge will continue until May 25. Interested individuals can register on the UIDAI website.

The Ministry indicated that following the fingerprint challenge, UIDAI plans to introduce SDK benchmarking competitions for iris and facial authentication.

“The SDK benchmarking competition, organized by UIDAI and IIIT-H, evaluates the efficiency of biometric verification and authentication SDKs. It offers a platform for researchers and industry leaders to assess the computational power and effectiveness of their SDKs,” UIDAI noted.

“With a vast dataset of authentic biometric data reflecting diverse geographies and demographics in India, the competition guarantees comprehensive algorithm testing across various challenges and ensures generalizability to real-world scenarios. Developers can pinpoint areas for enhancement and benefit from performance insights in collaboration with peers through competition participation,” it added.
