New Delhi, July 20 (NationPress) The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to initiate a comprehensive program aimed at accelerating the biometric update process of Aadhaar cards for children via schools within the next two months. This initiative targets over 7 crore children whose biometric records remain outdated.

UIDAI's CEO, Bhuvnesh Kumar, stated that the organization is currently in the testing phase of the technology and anticipates its readiness in the next 45–60 days. The program will be implemented in phases, starting with schools and later expanding to colleges for the second round of updates, necessary for children reaching the age of 15 years.

As per UIDAI guidelines, biometric updates are essential once a child turns 5 years old. For children under the age of 5, Aadhaar is issued without biometric data. Neglecting to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) before turning 7 could lead to the deactivation of their Aadhaar number. Updates between the ages of 5 and 7 are complimentary, while a fee of Rs 100 is applicable after turning 7.

“Aadhaar is vital for accessing benefits under numerous government schemes. We aim to ensure children receive all their benefits promptly. Through schools, we are attempting to reach as many children conveniently,” Kumar emphasized.

In addition, UIDAI has stressed the importance of completing the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children who have reached the age of seven but have not updated their biometric details in Aadhaar. Parents or guardians can update their child's information at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or designated Aadhaar center.

UIDAI has commenced sending SMS notifications to registered mobile numbers of children for initiating the MBU process.

A child’s Aadhaar biometrics can be updated free of charge between the ages of 5 and 7. A child under five years old can enroll for Aadhaar by providing a photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address, and proof documents. However, fingerprints and iris biometrics are not collected for Aadhaar enrollment for children under five, as these features are not fully developed at that age, according to an official statement.

Consequently, fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs are mandatory to be updated in Aadhaar when the child reaches 5 years of age. This is termed the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU), as explained in the statement.

Point of View

I firmly believe that UIDAI's initiative represents a significant step forward in ensuring that every child in India has access to their rightful benefits. This program not only emphasizes the importance of Aadhaar but also showcases a proactive approach in reaching out to families through educational institutions.
