Should US Senators Investigate Elon Musk's SpaceX for Possible Chinese Connections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 7 (NationPress) In a significant move, two Democratic senators from the United States, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Andy Kim of New Jersey, have called on the Department of Defense (DOD) to investigate SpaceX, the aerospace company led by billionaire Elon Musk.
The legislators have raised concerns that Chinese investors may have covertly acquired interests in the aerospace giant, as reported by The Hill.
In a letter directed to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the senators expressed their apprehensions regarding SpaceX, which serves as a key contractor for the DOD. They referenced recently unsealed court documents and a ProPublica investigation from March.
“These connections could represent a threat to national security, potentially endangering critical military, intelligence, and civilian infrastructure, and contradict the administration's stance on foreign investments from nations of concern in strategic sectors,” the senators articulated.
An investor associated with SpaceX disclosed in previously sealed testimony from October that the company had been cognizant of possible Chinese investments since 2015.
According to the ProPublica report, SpaceX permits Chinese investors to acquire stakes through offshore accounts.
The investigation also highlighted SpaceX executives’ choice to retract a $50 million investment in the company's stock from a Chinese entity following media coverage of the arrangement.
Warren and Kim emphasized that the DOD's reliance on SpaceX amplifies the reasons for concern. The company holds numerous contracts with the department, including a notable $5.9 billion launch service contract, as reported.
“The mere notion that an adversarial nation like China could exert influence over a crucial entity such as SpaceX, which supports our national security framework, is a risk that cannot be overlooked,” they stated.
Both senators further expressed specific worries that Chinese investors may leverage their position to access confidential corporate information, potentially compromising US national security.
Additionally, the senators requested a response from Hegseth by February 18 regarding several inquiries about Chinese influence at SpaceX. They also sought information on the DOD’s proposed measures to mitigate security risks associated with these investments, as stated in the report.
