WhatsApp bill payments via Bharat Connect: 22,722 billers, 30 categories
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
WhatsApp on Thursday, 3 September launched a bill payments feature in India, enabling users to find, manage, and pay household and utility bills without leaving the app. Powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, the service connects users to 22,722 billers across 30 categories — marking a significant expansion of the Meta-backed platform's financial services footprint in the country.
How the Feature Works
Users can access bill payments by tapping the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. The interface allows them to view past and upcoming payments, manage multiple accounts under a single provider, and settle dues via UPI or credit and debit cards.
The rollout is gradual and will be available to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks, the company said. Supported bill categories include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card, and loan repayments.
What the Company Said
Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head of Meta India, said WhatsApp is already central to how millions of Indians interact with businesses and access services. 'For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance — all without leaving the app,' he said.
'With Bill payments, we are bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household,' Srinivas added, noting that the goal is to make bill payments on WhatsApp 'as easy as sending a message.'
WhatsApp Pay's Growing UPI Footprint
WhatsApp Pay processed 150 million transactions in June 2026, up more than four times from 37 million transactions in June 2024. Its share of total UPI transaction volumes climbed to approximately 0.7% in June 2026, from 0.27% two years earlier — a steady but still modest slice of the UPI ecosystem dominated by PhonePe and Google Pay.
Broader Context: Meta's India Fintech Push
This comes amid a broader strategic push by Meta into financial services. Earlier in June 2026, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that CRED founder Kunal Shah would join Meta as WhatsApp's next global CEO, and that the company is investing approximately $900 million (nearly ₹8,550 crore) in the fintech firm. The bill payments launch can be read as a direct operational expression of that strategic alignment.
Notably, integrating BBPS-backed bill payments into a messaging app with hundreds of millions of Indian users could meaningfully shift how routine financial tasks are performed — particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where WhatsApp penetration is deep but dedicated fintech app adoption remains uneven. Whether WhatsApp can convert habitual chat users into habitual payment users at scale will be the real measure of this launch.
