Mumbai, Oct 8 (NationPress) Sandeep Indurkar, CEO of Payments at BharatPe, emphasized the significant influence of government policies on India's digital economy during a discussion with IANS at the Global Fintech Fest 2025.
He stated that the government's zero MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) initiative has been revolutionary, particularly benefiting offline businesses in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
“Merchants have transitioned from cash to QR payments due to the absence of fees. This measure has greatly enhanced digital transactions,” Indurkar explained.
He highlighted that modern payments encompass more than just money transfer; they also involve the exchange of data and nurturing customer relationships.
“When customers opt for UPI on a platform, they often get rerouted to competitor apps, disrupting the user experience. Our goal is to facilitate payments within the merchant’s app, maintaining the customer connection,” he added.
Indurkar noted that BharatPe offers a dedicated team along with an AI co-pilot to expedite the integration of digital payments for merchants.
This team assists in establishing the necessary product and technical framework while ensuring compliance with banks and NPCI.
He pointed to BharatPe's impressive growth as evidence of fintech's potential in India.
“In only six years, BharatPe has achieved a valuation exceeding $2 billion. Events like the Global Fintech Festival serve as a platform to showcase innovations, engage investors, and expand the customer base,” he remarked.
Indurkar further discussed how simplified payments are empowering small businesses and home entrepreneurs.
“Today, Instagram boutiques and individuals selling homemade goods can easily receive digital payments. This fosters trust and strengthens distribution networks, ultimately enhancing the economy,” he stated.
Reflecting on the government's initiatives, Indurkar commended efforts to promote digital adoption.
“With ONDC, UPI expansion, and zero MDR, the government has simplified the online transition for businesses. It’s inspiring to witness Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets leapfrogging into digital payments,” he mentioned.
Regarding the broader economic advancements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indurkar noted, “In the past 25 years, India has experienced substantial development. The digital payment landscape is a prime example of this growth, generating opportunities for businesses of all sizes.”
