Why Aren't A-Listers Supporting AI in Cinema?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Nov 4 (NationPress) Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, celebrated for his profound insights shared on social media, has ignited a significant dialogue regarding the future of cinema and the role of artificial intelligence.
On Tuesday, the Padma Bhushan award recipient expressed his thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to a post highlighting the reluctance of A-listers in Hindi cinema to engage with AI due to concerns over public perception.
The original poster stated, “I relocated from San Francisco to Mumbai to host India’s Largest AI Film Festival. I have never encountered such hypocrisy among Bollywood 'A-listers'—they avoid AI due to public sentiment, yet they inquire about introductions to our AI filmmakers for potential hiring. Many are hesitant to attend our AI Film Festival but request that their managers meet with AI film talent individually. I have lost track of the numerous prominent Bollywood figures investing millions in their in-house AI studios to remain competitive. This is a bubble ready to burst; the true innovators understand the future trends, while the public remains oblivious.”
In his reply, Shekhar emphasized the transformative capabilities of Artificial Intelligence in the film sector. He posited that the established hierarchies of Hollywood and mainstream cinema are on the verge of a significant overhaul.
He remarked, “You’re approaching the wrong individuals. The ‘A-listers’ reached the pinnacle based on business models that are soon to become obsolete. Studios in the US thrive because they’ve created expensive business structures that form entry barriers. AI will democratize filmmaking.”
“So why would those at the pinnacle of the pyramid advocate for it? Most fail to realize that AI represents a completely new technology. Unlike VFX, it’s not merely an enhancement,” he added.
