Los Angeles, April 3 (NationPress) Hollywood star Ana de Armas is against the idea of gender-swapping iconic characters in established franchises like ‘James Bond’.
The actress believes that the focus should be on creating more original films, such as her upcoming bare-knuckle action project ‘Ballerina’, instead of altering legacy characters, according to ‘Variety’.
During her time at CinemaCon, where she was promoting the ‘John Wick’ spinoff from Lionsgate, de Armas addressed comments made by actress Helen Mirren earlier this week.
As reported by ‘Variety’, the acclaimed actress stated in an interview with the UK’s Guardian that she has “never liked the way women were portrayed in James Bond”, claiming that the foundation of the billion-dollar spy franchise is steeped in profound sexism.
Ana de Armas made a notable entrance in the 2021 Bond film ‘No Time to Die’, where her character Paloma was celebrated for breaking away from the traditional Bond Girl mold. Not only did she bring humor to the film, but she also displayed formidable skills in combat alongside Daniel Craig, even saving his character’s life during their scenes together.
“Why don't we see more films centered around Paloma? Let James remain James and John Wick stay John Wick. We should carve our own path,” she remarked at The John Wick Experience, a multi-room immersive event where fans can visit the infamous Continental Hotel from the Keanu Reeves films.
She expressed, “When a woman fights, you’ll be amazed at what she can accomplish.”
The Oscar nominee also mentioned that as the longtime producers of the Bond franchise have passed the creative reins to Amazon MGM, there are new storytelling possibilities ahead.
“I’m confident that Barbara Broccoli and Robert Wilson made the right choice for the future of James Bond. The creative potential is limitless,” she said regarding future tales from the universe of Ian Fleming’s spy novels.
At Lionsgate's presentation during the annual convention for cinema owners, de Armas showcased that ‘Ballerina’ serves as a model for the type of female-led action content she wishes to see more of in the industry.
As Eve Maccaro, a dancer turned assassin on a quest for revenge for her father's murder, the actress portrays a tough yet glamorous character, enduring physical challenges and intense fight sequences.
She revealed that her preparation and filming schedule were rigorous, with trainers focusing on calorie cycling and recovery to keep her in top form.
