Los Angeles, March 30 (NationPress) Acclaimed Hollywood actress Helen Mirren expressed her longstanding disapproval of the James Bond film series, stating that the entire idea is steeped in deep-rooted sexism.
Mirren is set to collaborate with her former co-star Pierce Brosnan once again in Guy Ritchie’s MobLand, and while she considers herself a “huge fan of Brosnan,” she finds the James Bond franchise, in which he stars, to be distinctly “not her thing” because of its depiction of women.
“I mean, oh my god. Obviously, he’s gorgeous and everything, and I think he’s fabulous in MobLand, but he also happens to be one of the nicest people you’ll ever have the pleasure to work with. And indeed Daniel Craig, who I’ve met and know a little bit,” she remarked.
“Again, a very lovely gracious person,” she told the UK’s The Standard in a recent interview, as reported by deadline.com.
However, she added: “The entire series of James Bond, it was not my thing. It truly wasn’t. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were portrayed in James Bond.”
Consequently, the 1923 star stated that she is against a female actor taking on the role of 007 and would prefer to see adaptations of real women from history who held positions as spies.
“The whole concept of James Bond is steeped in profound sexism,” Mirren stated.
“Women have always been a vital and incredibly significant part of the Secret Service, they always have been. And very brave. If you learn about what women accomplished in the French Resistance, they were astonishingly courageous.”
“Thus, I would tell authentic stories about extraordinary women who’ve operated in that realm.”
Overall, the future of the franchise remains uncertain, as it finds itself in a complicated situation following the transfer of creative authority to Amazon MGM Studios from longtime caretakers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in a $1 billion agreement.
Nonetheless, in the latest update, the conglomerate confirmed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will oversee production for the upcoming installment.
