Mumbai, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Hindi film industry has experienced a significant slowdown at the box office during the initial two months of 2026. While many Hindi films have struggled to attract substantial audiences, ‘Border 2’ has stood out as a commercial success.

IANS reached out to film exhibitor Manoj Desai to discuss the performance of Hindi films over this period.

Desai remarked, “‘Border 2’ was excellent. Previous films featuring Sunny Deol have also performed well. Both brothers, Abhay Deol and Sunny Deol, along with their entire family, have produced remarkable films.”

He also mentioned the film ‘Assi’, starring Taapsee Pannu, noting that it failed to draw audiences. Desai stated, “Despite not performing admirably, it wasn’t an utter flop. The audience comes and goes, that’s all. The rest is not a blockbuster.”

When questioned about whether audiences are turning away from content-driven films, he responded, “I don’t believe so. Mardani was also released, which was a women-centric narrative. Both Mardani 1 and Mardani 2 have done exceptionally well.”

On the subject of the most popular film among viewers, he highlighted, “‘Dhurandar’, which is highly violent. Critics question, ‘How can there be this much violence?’ Yet, the audience is captivated. People have watched it repeatedly.”

‘Border 2’, featuring Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan, has emerged as one of the biggest Hindi blockbusters of 2026, benefiting from strong opening day figures and the buzz around the Republic Day weekend. It launched with over INR 30 crores on its first day and has maintained a robust performance throughout its opening week.

Point of View

The current state of Hindi cinema reflects both audience preferences and market dynamics. While ‘Border 2’ has proven successful, it raises questions about the future of content-driven films in a time of changing viewer interests.
