Mumbai, March 27 (NationPress) In celebration of World Theatre Day, actor Chandan Roy Sanyal expressed his profound love for theatre and underscored the vibrant legacy of this art form in India.
While recognizing the nation's historical theatre culture, he stressed the importance of increased support to ensure its growth. He stated to IANS, "Theatre in my country is among the oldest art forms globally, and we possess a remarkable theatre culture, history, and industry. Yet, despite this heritage, theatre has frequently been overlooked."
"Somehow, we have come to regard it as a lesser art form... I am unsure why. More assistance from the government is essential. Although there is an audience for theatre, I believe it should be introduced in schools starting from Class 1."
Sanyal also discussed the core of genuine artistry, asserting that for a true theatre artist, financial gain and fame are not priorities. "I don’t perceive a challenge for money because a true artist does not focus on wealth and recognition. These aspects naturally follow. When you dedicate yourself to the art, it ceases to be about money."
Recalling his most unforgettable stage experience, the ‘Aashram’ actor reminisced about performing in one of the UK's oldest theatres. "That moment was exceptionally significant, showcasing how theatre unites artists across cultures and eras."
For those unfamiliar, prior to his remarkable performances in "Kaminey" and "Aashram," Chandan Roy Sanyal was deeply engaged in the energetic theatre scene of Delhi. As a mathematics graduate from Zakir Husain College, he attributes his stage experiences to shaping his daring and non-traditional acting style.
His love for theatre led him beyond Indian borders, bringing him to England as part of a distinguished Royal Shakespeare production. Traveling the globe, he breathed life into Shakespeare’s classic works. During this time, theatre was his primary focus, and he even contemplated making London his artistic base. He nearly secured a place in the prestigious West End Theatre scene, with plans almost finalized for a production at the iconic Piccadilly Theatre.
Recently, Chandan reprised his famous role, Bhopa Swami, in “Aashram Season 3 Part 2.” The series features Bobby Deol as the manipulative Baba Nirala, who preys on the young women in his ashram. The second part of Season 3 premiered on February 27 on Amazon MX Player.
