Los Angeles, July 6 (NationPress) Iconic Hollywood star Michael Douglas, who recently graced the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to unveil a newly restored version of Milos Forman’s timeless classic ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, has firmly stated that he will not make a comeback.
During his address at the festival, he expressed deep concerns regarding the state of democracy in the U.S. amidst the Trump administration, according to reports from Variety.
When questioned at a press conference about the political landscape in his homeland, the Academy Award winner remarked that the country is currently “flirting with autocracy.”
“I view it as a reminder of how invaluable democracy is, how easily it can be compromised, and how it must be safeguarded,” he continued. “I hope that what we’re facing now serves as a lesson of the extensive efforts the Czechs undertook to achieve their freedom and independence. Politics today appear to be driven by profit. Money has infiltrated democracy and has turned into a profit-making venture. People are entering politics today with financial motives. We once upheld an idealism in the U.S. that is now absent.”
As reported by Variety, Douglas concluded his remarks by stating he would prefer “not to delve too deeply” since “the news itself is quite telling.”
He shared, “I am genuinely concerned, I feel anxious, and I believe it's each of our responsibilities to remain vigilant.”
The screening of this multiple-Oscar-winning film took place five years after ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ was last shown in Karlovy Vary, celebrating the film's connection to the town and Forman’s native country.
The director was a dedicated supporter of the festival, and alongside Douglas, producer Saul Zaentz and actor Danny DeVito, who also starred in the film, were honored with the festival’s Crystal Globe for their remarkable contributions to global cinema.
