Mumbai, May 29 (NationPress) The Indian cinema icon Kamal Haasan, who is set to feature in the forthcoming film ‘Thug Life’, believes that a versatile artist must leverage all of their skills to enhance a film's narrative.
The acclaimed actor recently engaged in a conversation with IANS prior to the film's debut, discussing his partnership with the six-time National Award-winning director Mani Ratnam, who is at the helm of ‘Thug Life’.
When queried if he turns off his directing instincts while collaborating with another filmmaker like Mani, Kamal responded, “Every ability should be activated. He (Mani Ratnam) should not disable his actor’s persona. Sometimes he asks me to pull my stomach in, as I had gained some weight. Honestly, I don’t carry that weight at all.”
“In the future, what we both are creating will be managed by one individual, provided that individual fully utilizes all of their creative faculties. The tools available today streamline the process. The carpenter from Jesus’ time and the modern carpenter are worlds apart; that’s how our art evolves,” he elaborated.
Kamal is reuniting with Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades with ‘Thug Life’. Their last collaboration was in ‘Nayakan’ back in 1987. Much has transformed in the last 38 years; India has opened its economy, seen significant political shifts, television has surged, and cinema has diversified. Previously, the seasoned actor remarked that cinema has become a language and a means of communication for them.
Kamal shared with IANS, “Cinema has evolved into a language. We may not know our fluency, but we engage with it. We are improving. It’s like we’ve shed the slur we once had; that baby talk is behind us now. However, we are still a work in progress.”
Produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, R. Mahendran, and Siva Ananth, ‘Thug Life’ is set for a global theatrical release on June 5, 2025.
