Los Angeles, April 14 (NationPress) Despite being frequently embroiled in controversies, rapper Kanye West's artistic value is on the rise. His early artistic creations have now reached an estimated $3.1 million.

The 48-year-old artist produced these drawings and paintings during his teenage years at Polaris School in Chicago. They gained wider recognition when they were publicly unveiled in 2021, according to reports from ‘Female First UK’.

Initially, the artworks were appraised between $16,000 and $23,000. They were subsequently acquired by Vinoda Basnayake, an entrepreneur and collector based in Washington DC, whose purchase price remains confidential due to a non-disclosure agreement. After a revaluation under the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice in late 2025, Basnayake now asserts that the collection is worth $3.1 million.

According to ‘Female First UK’, the collection consists of five pieces, including a drawing from around 1995 depicting Kanye’s mother, Donda West, who passed away at 58, now valued at $335,000. Basnayake believes the initial television valuation failed to capture the true significance of these works.

He explained to Page Six that the initial assessment “materially missed the bigger picture” because it treated the artworks as typical celebrity art, which generally does not command high value on its own. He emphasized that these pieces should be viewed as the beginning of Kanye West's creative journey, noting that he has since become one of the most successful producers, musical artists, and fashion designers of his generation.

Interest in the artwork has surged due to online coverage and social media discussions, including features by rap-centric outlet Bars, prompting Basnayake to publicly discuss the valuation. Kanye's public profile remains contentious, particularly following his series of antisemitic remarks online that led to numerous brand deal cancellations and his being “cancelled.”

Moreover, significant events associated with Kanye have faced disruptions. Recently, the Wireless Festival in London was cancelled after brands withdrew their support due to his role as a headliner, and the UK government denied him entry.

Point of View

It's clear that Kanye West's artistic endeavors, despite his controversial public image, continue to gain recognition and value. His teenage artworks, now appraised significantly higher than their initial valuations, highlight a unique intersection of celebrity culture and artistic expression.
